One of the biggest perks to my job is being able to reconnect with old friends that I normally wouldn’t see as often if it weren’t for our photography sessions. Jennifer is a dear friend of mine that I went to high school with in Lebanon, IN. She is the kind of friend who can pick back up where you left off, even after years without seeing each other. Our lives took us to different schools in different cities and then fast forward about a decade and I realize I haven’t spent time with this friend of mine for several years. Lucky enough for me, while I was starting a business, Jennifer was starting a family. What better way to reunite with a friend than with a cake smash session to celebrate the first birthday of her adorable little boy, Jaxon.
This gig was easily one of my all time favorite in-studio sessions! I think it’s easy to see why with this charming little guy! First birthdays are such a big milestone in a baby’s life. Another big milestone in life: the first time you indulge in the sugary goodness of a well made birthday cake. I wish I would have had my first encounter with cake documented. I mean, my relationship with cake has stood the test of time. Why wouldn’t it? Who doesn’t have a great love for the kind of treat that is made with fluffy goodness, covered in icing and serves as a reminder that today is YOUR day? It doesn’t get much better than that in my opinion.
I have an inkling that Jaxon feels the same way as I do about cake. How can you not smile when you look at this little munchkin!? We did this shoot in Fishers, at my home in my makeshift studio room that I use for all indoor sessions. He did such a good job. I couldn’t have asked for a happier baby. At 1 year, most babies are still enjoying the newness of being mobile on their own and sometimes it’s hard to keep them in one spot. This little guy stayed put in front of the backdrop the entire session like the perfect little model baby that he was. He definitely made my job easy that day.
At first he was a little distracted by the decor. With balloons flying and confetti thrown all around him, there was a lot going on for a little guy to take it. But like the rest of us, all it took was one bite for this little guy to realize that cake trumps confetti any day. He didn’t dive right in like Jennifer and I had expected him to but that changed pretty quickly. With a little help from mom, he was able to get down and dirty while shoving as much icing in his face as possible. While indulging in birthday cake, Jaxon was sure to flash the most adorable little smiles in between bites. Who knew one could be so cute while stuffing their face? GOALS, am I right? Now if we can just get adult cake smash sessions to start happening, that’d be great. Any takers?
